I recently took out a loan from a bank. As a requirement, I enrolled in a Term policy issued by your Company and designated the bank as my beneficiary. Is this acceptable?

Any person or institution that can suffer financial loss from the death of a person, or have an insurable interest in that person, may be assigned as beneficiary in a life insurance policy. In your case, you may designate the bank as your beneficiary so that it is protected in the event that you are no longer able to pay back your loan due to death or disability.

In general, the acceptable beneficiaries for a life insurance policy are:

  • legal spouse (common-law spouses are not valid as beneficiaries)
  • children both natural or adopted
  • parents, brothers, sisters
  • creditors
  • business partners/corporations
  • charitable institutions (where the insured is a regular donor)

I got a permanent life insurance policy from Generali. I have already paid my premiums for the last 5 years. However, I can no longer continue paying for it. What options are available to me so I could still continue protecting myself?

At the time of application, you will be given options in case you default on the payments of your insurance premiums. You may choose one from the following options:

Apply for Reduced Paid-Up Insurance -Your policy's net cash value will be used to pay for a paid-up insurance of the same plan as your original policy. However, the amount of your coverage that can be purchased will be smaller than the face value of your original policy.

Apply for an Extended Term Insurance - Your policy's net cash value will be used to pay a term insurance for the same coverage as your original policy for as long a terms as the net cash value can provide.

Apply for an Automatic Premium Loan - A loan against the policy's cash value will be used to pay for your due premium. This will keep the original policy in force for the full amount of coverage, as long as the cash value is sufficient to pay for the due premiums.
